Nirvana formed in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987 around Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, with Dave Grohl arriving on drums in 1990 ahead of Nevermind on DGC in September 1991. The Happy Face smiley became shorthand for the Nevermind-era band, printed by Cobain onto flyers for the Rome release party and picked up on tour merchandise across the Sub Pop-to-DGC transition. In Utero followed on Geffen in September 1993. This distressed cap treatment carries the smiley in aged-embroidery register.
