Candlemass formed Stockholm in 1984 around bassist and songwriter Leif Edling, and their 1986 debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus is credited with naming the epic-doom sub-genre outright. Nightfall (1987), Ancient Dreams (1988) and the self-titled 2005 return kept the operatic-doom register that made the band a genre cornerstone.
