Hushed & Grim landed on Reprise in October 2021 as Mastodon's ninth studio record, produced with David Bottrill and stretching across a double-LP run track-listed at fifteen. The record leaned harder into the elegiac end of the band's register than the tight-focus Emperor of Sand, and Paul Romano's associated art direction threaded serpent-and-skull motifs through the sleeve and its merchandise line. The Hushed Snake graphic sits in that same visual family.
