Fairground artist Joe Ephgrave hand-painted the Sgt. Pepper drum face for the 1967 sleeve shoot at Chelsea Manor Studios, one of two drum-skin versions Peter Blake had prepared. Its Victorian circus-billboard lettering and painted-scroll flourishes were an on-purpose pastiche of the pageant the album was ushering in, and the crest has since become the Sgt. Pepper universe's clearest visual shorthand. The navy ground drops the crest closer to a night-sky reading of that fairground light.
