John Pasche drew the Tongue and Lips at the Royal College of Art in 1970 after a briefing session with Mick Jagger, who wanted a mark that could match the band's live swagger without leaning on their faces. The tongue first appeared inside the Sticky Fingers sleeve in 1971 and has since run alongside every subsequent Stones LP from Exile on Main St. through Some Girls, Tattoo You, Voodoo Lounge and out to Hackney Diamonds. On the navy ground it drops into the deeper, cooler register the band's later tour graphics tend to favour.
