News of the World arrived as Queen's sixth studio album in October 1977, its cover a Frank Kelly Freas painting adapted from a 1953 Astounding Science Fiction illustration in which a giant robot cradles the corpses of the four band members in the palm of its hand. The record itself opens with We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions back-to-back, one of rock's most-played one-two openers, and the Kelly Freas robot has since fronted every subsequent News of the World reissue, tour graphic and stage backdrop. Rendered on a bandana square, the robot's palm sits central and the black ground keeps the pulp-sci-fi mood.
