Tom Petty formed the Heartbreakers in Gainesville, Florida in 1976 out of the earlier Mudcrutch, with Mike Campbell on guitar, Benmont Tench on keys, Ron Blair on bass and Stan Lynch on drums, cutting the self-titled debut later that year on Shelter Records. Damn the Torpedoes 1979 broke them wide with Refugee and Don't Do Me Like That, then Hard Promises 1981, Long After Dark 1982 and Southern Accents 1985 rolled the Byrds-descended jangle-rock template into MTV rotation, before Full Moon Fever 1989 and Wildflowers 1994 held the same graphic identity across their solo years.
