Gojira formed in Bayonne, France, 1996 (brothers Joe and Mario Duplantier, Christian Andreu and Jean-Michel Labadie). The band moved from technical death metal into progressive territory across From Mars to Sirius (2005), The Way of All Flesh (2008) and Magma (2016), settling into a stately ecological register by Fortitude (2021) on Roadrunner. Tree Of Life sits inside that ecological iconography.
