Behemoth came out of Gdańsk, Poland in 1991 under Adam "Nergal" Darski, moving from black metal into the blackened death sound that carried Demigod (2004), The Apostasy (2007), The Satanist (2014) and Opvs Contra Natvram (2022). The O'Death motif reads as a nod to the traditional-death lament that has run through folk and gospel canons long before the metal register took it up.
