In the City arrived in May 1977, produced by Vic Coppersmith-Heaven at Stratford Place Studios in London, twelve tracks of amphetamine-fast Woking mod-punk that opened The Jam's Polydor account. The record's title track put Weller's Union Jack Rickenbacker and Bruce Foxton's driving bass onto Top of the Pops and set the visual language the group carried through six albums and eighteen singles.
