Black Sabbath dropped on Friday 13 February 1970, the album that effectively invented heavy metal across the title track, The Wizard, N.I.B. and the rest of the seven tracks. Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward and Ozzy Osbourne formed the band in Birmingham in 1968, a working-class West Midlands quartet who turned blues-rock into something altogether heavier. Marcus Keef's cover photograph remains one of the most-imitated pieces of metal album art ever produced.
