Chthonic formed in Taipei in 1995 and grew into one of Asia's most-toured extreme-metal exports, folding Taiwanese folk instruments (the erhu two-stringed fiddle in particular) into a black-metal foundation. Frontman Freddy Lim later served as a Taiwanese lawmaker. The Gothic wordmark has been the band's shopfront across records like Seediq Bale (2005), Takasago Army (2011) and Battlefields of Asura (2018).
