Machine Head is the foundation document of British hard rock, home to Highway Star, Smoke on the Water, Lazy, Pictures of Home and Space Truckin' across its seven tracks.

The album was recorded in December 1971 in Montreux, Switzerland: the same trip that gave the world the Casino fire that became the subject of Smoke on the Water. Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice cut the record live in the Grand Hotel using the Rolling Stones' mobile studio.
