The Dancing Bears first appeared on the back cover of History of the Grateful Dead, Volume One (Bear's Choice), the 1973 live LP named for soundman Owsley 'Bear' Stanley. Bob Thomas drew the lined-up bears as part of the album layout, and the row of cartoon ursine silhouettes has been Grateful Dead shorthand ever since. This treatment runs the bears across a striped sock body for a more graphic register than the plain mono cousin.
