The happy-face smiley started as a hand-drawn Kurt Cobain flyer for the Rome Nevermind release party in September 1991, and quickly became one of the band's most recognisable stage-and-print motifs. Nirvana formed in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987 around Cobain and Krist Novoselic, with Dave Grohl joining on drums in 1990 for the Sub Pop-to-DGC transition into Nevermind and In Utero (September 1993).
