John Lydon formed Public Image Ltd in London in May 1978 alongside Keith Levene on guitar and Jah Wobble on bass, and cut a post-punk arc through First Issue in December 1978, Metal Box in November 1979 and The Flowers of Romance in 1981. The wordmark on this tee lifts directly from the sleeve typography of that early cycle.
