Caress of Steel was the early-Peart record, marking Neil Peart's arrival on drums and the start of Rush's pivot from straight hard rock toward the prog-rock concept albums that would define 2112 the following year. The album commercially underperformed at the time but contained The Necromancer and the side-long Fountain of Lamneth, two of the band's first ambitious narrative compositions.
