Peter Blake's Sgt. Pepper sleeve was shot in March 1967 at Chelsea Manor Studios, and Joe Ephgrave painted two drum faces for the shoot in the Victorian-showman lettering that reads across the crest today. That circus-billboard scroll has since travelled well beyond the album, cropping up on anniversary reissues, animated inserts, and every subsequent retrospective of the psychedelic-pop reset the record represents. The grey ground here drops the pageant into something almost sepia, closer to a print-shop proof than a fairground stall.
