The Sgt. Pepper drum skin was hand-painted by fairground artist Joe Ephgrave for the 1967 sleeve shoot at Chelsea Manor Studios, one of two drum-face versions Peter Blake had made up for the shoot. Its circus-billboard scroll and painted-fairground lettering read like a Victorian showman's stall, an on-purpose pastiche of the psychedelic pageant the album was announcing. The red colourway pushes the crest closer to the original sleeve's warm palette than the paler cousins.
